POWERING
IDAHO'S FUTURE
Nuclear energy doesn't have to be complicated. We're here to help Idaho understand it.
WHY DOES NUCLEAR ENERGY MATTER TO IDAHO?
-

Reliable Energy
Reliable electricity that's available around the clock.
-

Idaho Jobs
Supporting skilled careers, local businesses and economic opportunity.
-

OUR ENVIRON-MENT
Understanding how nuclear fits into conversations about land, water, emissions and Idaho's natural resources.
-

Idaho's Future
Exploring how energy availability affects Idaho's communities and growing economy.
NUCLEAR 101
Nuclear Energy, Without the Jargon.
-
Nuclear energy uses heat created by splitting uranium atoms to make steam. That steam turns a turbine, which generates electricity for the power grid.
-
Used nuclear fuel is safely removed from the reactor and securely stored. Although it is no longer efficient enough to remain in the reactor, most of its potential energy is still there, and some advanced technologies may allow more of that energy to be used in the future.
-
A single nuclear power plant can generate enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes. The exact amount depends on the size and type of reactor.
-
Nuclear plants don't depend on sunshine, wind, or weather conditions to produce electricity. They can operate around the clock, providing a steady and reliable source of power.
-
Nuclear produces large amounts of reliable electricity from a relatively small amount of fuel and does so without producing carbon dioxide during normal electricity generation. It can work alongside other energy sources to help create a diverse and reliable power grid.
-
Advanced nuclear refers to newer reactor technologies designed to build on today's nuclear power. Many designs are smaller, more flexible, and incorporate new safety features, making them potentially useful for communities, industries, and growing energy needs.
You shouldn't need an engineering degree to understand nuclear energy. We're breaking down the technology, terminology, and common questions into information everyone can understand.
ABOUT US
Nuclear for Idaho is an Idaho-based nonprofit dedicated to helping Idahoans better understand nuclear energy and the role it could play in our state's future.
Nuclear energy can be complicated. Our mission is to make the conversation easier to understand by providing straightforward information, answering difficult questions, sharing reliable sources, and connecting energy issues to the Idaho communities they affect.
We believe Idahoans deserve good information and an opportunity to be part of the conversation about our energy future
